Words: This is one of the most powerful tool available to man. Words are used and abused extensively. What would communication be like without it? Communication is the basis of all relationships. Spoken, unspoken or written says it all. Society is ruled by technology that is dependent on words. Every tool or gizmo introduced is ruled by it.
The songs we sing are powerful words. Most of the time we find ourselves swaying to the tune and singing along. The movies we watch keep our attention. We listen to the words at times intently to be able to follow through and "get it." Despite the advances in technology and telecommunication, business meetings in person still occur. There is nothing like personal communication and exchange of words.
Imagine the agony of a person who cannot express himself/herself with words. This can be most frustrating and devastating. There are moments when we are lost for words. Don't you feel like choking? We can hardly wait till a baby speaks their first words, whatever it is.
Spoken words
How we express ourselves with words can reveal a lot about us. It defines us. Be it positive or negative, what we talk about reflect our inner beliefs and values. It is with words that we express feelings, emotions, likes and dislikes, approval or disapproval and more. We all say words that we regret later. These can impart pain to someone else. Words are blurted out and of course without thought. Remember that what we say can never be erased or taken back, no matter how hard we try.
Words are used to speak of love, affection or approval. Tender words of endearment is uplifting. It is reassuring. It is encouraging and inspiring. Kind words can calm down a troubled mind, lift up a sad heart. We offer consoling words of sympathy to our grieving loved ones, even though at times, we cannot find the right words.
It is with words that we convey our negative thoughts and feelings. We lie, gossip, slander, brag or malign. We curse, we swear with words. Words express our pain or anger. Knowingly or unknowingly, what we say can hurt someone deeply.
Words do and can get us in trouble. Sometimes, one has to express a brutal truth. People who are in the public eye can be glorified or crucified by the words they speak.
Unspoken words
Action speaks louder than words. How true, but with these actions are unspoken words. It is said that pictures can say a thousand words. Again, these are unspoken. Icons appear in applications- again, unspoken words. Reading someone's mind means unspoken words. A tender glance across the room to someone you care about can be saying I love you, or you are doing great.
A face showing anger or a certain look are unspoken that can say watch it, or you are in trouble. A soft touch can convey a loving or caring message that is unspoken.
Any message we send with cards or via the internet are unspoken words. We are all aware of the power of the pen- the unspoken written words.
Words are part of our humanity. It is a tool we use that at times we take for granted. Believe in the power of the word.
