The title to this article sounds a little odd. I am told that this is a favorite phrase of Bukaroo Bonzai. You may feel free to look him up, but best I can tell, he was a space-travelling, renaissance man.
I was venturing onto a message board today. As I read, I came across a woman who was having severe crises in her personal life. This was not a spiritual board. In fact, it might be quite far from such. Still, as I read, I was moved to reply and offer her some semblance of understanding, counsel and simply the knowledge that she is not alone and that “this too shall pass”.
I found myself saying things that I would say to any of my clients were this a similar situation. I reminded myself that this is part of my calling, that I am a spiritual counselor. I may not have a sign outside my house that declares this, but in essence, it is what I do on a regular basis, regardless of where I am.
Our card this month is the Page of Pentacles. We see a puppy, young and learning. Behind him is a pentacle, one that seems almost to fade into the background. Some of the most affective people I have ever met do not stand out significantly from their environment. Nor do they walk around trying to look cool or gain attention for what it is that they do. Some of the kindest and most spiritual people I have had the privilege to meet will simply be where they are and who they are. No matter where they go, there they are.
As I wrote a reply to the woman in crisis, I felt a surge of knowing. I knew that she had no idea who or what I may be. No one on that list knows me. Yet, something about my reply spurred her on to send me a personal message, thanking me for my words. There is not anything more rewarding than knowing that you have helped someone. And, here I was, not even wearing my mantle and still I was able to do my “job”.
Pages are about learning, about moving into what you are born to be. Pentacles are about the earth, money, health, anything to do with this world in which we live. I have had very little experience with the world. It sounds strange, but worldly matters are almost foreign to me in some ways. If there is a way to trip up when it comes to matters of the Pentacles, I can find it. I am sure many of you feel similarly. You may even feel like a stranger in this world.
Look at our Page. He sits alone on the grass. He is connected to the earth, but not necessarily the world. The earth element links very closely to the world, but there can be nuances of differences. Ultimately, we hope that what we do on this earth, in this world, will still smack of our nature. Most reading anything on this site are spiritual seekers. Your heart, mind and soul tend to drift into something outside of the worldly realm. While this is all very good and fine, if you cannot translate your spirituality to the world, then what use is it?
Forgive me as I quote this poorly, but Saul of Tarsus, later Paul said that he became all things to all people that by all means he might win some. This is a man who felt he was called to a deep spiritual journey. In that, he knew that he must be everything that any common man might need in order to provide spiritual food to them. He could not be a King, as that would put him too far above those people. He could not be a Knight, for knights are about action, and not every person wants you to do something. He was a Page, just as were all of those whom he counseled. The page is learning, walking the walk. Our Page of Pentacles walks this walk in the world, amongst the people.
I say it again, you may have the greatest spiritual gift since creation, but if you cannot provide it to those who need it, it is useless. If you need the limelight in order to do your spiritual work, then you will not meet the needs of many, many people. So many individuals shy away from those limelights. They have been burned by those standing therein. They have been pushed away by the crowds that follow such celebrities. The people who are helped by the “rich and famous” spiritual counselors are few and far between. It matters not how many books that they write or how many public appearances that they make; if they cannot walk among the commoners and touch a life, they are of no use to anyone save themselves.
What if you, reading this now, feel called to help people? Are you waiting for some magical door to open before you and the lights to shine down while trumpets sound and angels escort you to the stage? The most intense and loving help that can be given is done so without all the fanfare. You need not even seek it out, it will find you. A woman sitting on a bench in a park, all alone may only need a warm smile to fill her heart. A friend who calls for no reason, but just needs to hear a friendly voice may be counseled simply by you being willing to be there.
Not every person can do everything. We all have our strengths and our weaknesses. Play to your strengths. If you hate the phone, but love to talk face to face, then avoid the one in favor of the other. If you can write, send a letter or email to someone just to let him or her know that you care. If you have extra money, buy some groceries for a single mother or a senior citizen on a fixed income. You might even consider having them delivered by someone so you can remain anonymous. What are you good at? Can you knit? Are you good at gardening? These seem like simple things, but the greatest blessings come from the simplest gifts. Pentacles call us to use our earthly abilities.
Use what you have and give from those gifts. Then, do not, and I repeat, do not judge another light worker because they do not live up to your standards. One person may not do well in person with people, but still have a calling to help. Let each person do what they do the way that they need to do it. I see so much judgment in the spiritual community. So-and-so just does not do this or that. Maybe so-and-so is not called to do that or this, maybe you are and all your belly aching is just wasting energy you could spend doing the thing that needs doing.
I have been seemingly harsh in this article. For the self-proclaimed gurus who have forgotten why they began their journey, consider it a reminder of home. For those of you who feel that you are just not enough, you are all that you need to be. Nothing stops you from doing something to offer blessings to others. You do not have to wait to be in the right place at the right time with the right things. Buckaroo Banzai did not know how much he said when he proclaimed, “No matter where you go, there you are.” No matter where you go, there you and your gifts are. If you are a Page of Pentacles, there is no waiting for the light to shine down on you; your gifts are appreciated more by those who live in the shadows. They need not know that you are what you are. All that they will know is that you touched their lives and for that, they will never forget you.
