The dreaded Mercury retrograde is upon us once more. If you have never heard of Mercury retrograde pay attention, it might save you a lot of money and a lot of aggravation.
The planet Mercury rules all forms of communication (phones, emails, faxes, etc.), thought processes and speaking, and transportation.
Three times each year – for about 3 weeks at a time – Mercury turns retrograde. The influence can also be felt one week before the exact date and one week after. This leaves a large opportunity for things to go awry. Nobody – and certainly not businesses – can put their lives “on hold” until this cycle ends. So chances are, you will experience some kind of problem(s) ranging from minor inconveniences to never-ending repairs.
Never make a major purchase like a house, vehicle, or round-the-world cruise and never sign a contract during Mercury retrograde. The house will have mold infestation, the vehicle will be a lemon, and the cruise ship will run aground (just a few examples of what might happen). Even minor purchases will have problems. Like that slinky little black number you bought – and then gained a few pounds before you could wear it, making the dress look like a sausage-casing.
Most of my headaches can be traced back to making the purchase during Mercury retrograde. I have also started a couple of jobs during this time and they have all turned out to be stinkers. My job duties morphed into something that didn’t even resemble the job description. And my new bosses turned into female versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Do not initiate a contract during this period, but if you are served with one – READ IT CAREFULLY. Read it over a few times. You will find mistakes in it. My mother had her Will drawn up by a lawyer during a retrograde period and not even a year later, she is now having it revised (she had a falling-out with one of her beneficiaries).
Life goes on and sometimes you can’t help starting something new during a Mercury retrograde period. Just try not to start anything major like your own business – it will struggle to get off the ground, if it ever does. And don’t get married during this period. Some things are way too important not to plan their beginnings.
And don’t book a vacation or travel during Mercury retrograde if you can help it. Luggage gets lost, your hotel will turn out to be La Cucaracha Cantina, or you will come down with a nasty bug and be bed-ridden the whole time. A lady I worked with a few years ago booked a trip to Belize during Mercury retrograde. This was the trip-of-a-lifetime for her, but it turned into the vacation-from-hell. It started when she, and her boyfriend, missed the connecting flight, which only flies into Belize City once a day. They were awake for over 48 hrs. by the time they got to Belize – only to be informed that their luggage didn’t make it. Somewhere along the line their luggage wasn’t transferred to the right plane. They never did find it. So they had no change of clothes for about three days – they slept in the clothes they were wearing. The hotel turned out to be cockroach-infested and it rained most of the time they were there. She caught a nasty cold and had to travel home with it. She was so stuffed up she thought her head was going to explode in the plane, on the trip home, with the air pressure.
If you send an important document by mail, fax, or email, CONFIRM that the person actually received it. The same with phone calls – follow up to make sure they got your message. This kind of communication is the first to just disappear into the ethers.

But there are some bonuses to Mercury retrograde. I got a speeding ticket during one retrograde period and I was going to pay it, but then after reading it carefully, I noticed the officer wrote the wrong street on the ticket. It was close – but no cigar. I disputed it and won. And sometimes you do have a chance of righting things that went awry during a previous retrograde.
And Mercury retrograde is also good for the three R’s – research, reassess, and restructure. You can still look at houses (or vehicles), if you are in the market to buy one. Do your research, reassess the situation (“can I/we really afford this home/car?”), and maybe restructure things (if you don’t really need a home with 6 bedrooms, look at smaller houses, or don’t buy that gas-guzzling truck when a smaller vehicle will do). Making these kinds of purchases during Mercury retrograde will guarantee a constant drain on your pocketbook.
You may also hear from someone that you haven’t heard from in years. A lot of people reconnect during Mercury retrogrades. And if you have been thinking about someone you haven’t spoken to in awhile – give them a call. Chances are they’ll be happy to hear from you. If they aren’t, you can always tell them they should go ahead and buy that new car (or barbecue/diamond pendant/little black dress, etc.) they’ve always wanted ;) ……
