I know how to fly. No, I do not climb aboard a 747. I literally can fly and have learned how to do it quite well. It does take practice, after all. Any bird will tell you that they spend many a day hovering above their nest before mom finally gives them that final shove.

The kind of flying to which I am referring is the kind that we do in our dreams. I have had flying dreams for a good deal of my life. When I was younger, I would inevitably crash. With time, I began to understand why I was crashing and how to stay airborne.

IOur card this month is the Nine of Pentacles. This card has some special meaning for me. In a traditional deck, we see a woman behind a gate. She is surrounded by the bounty of nature and a hooded raptor sits upon her wrist. To me, this is a card of comfort and security. This woman is sheltered away from the world and its difficulties. She is provided for, well-taken care of and holds upon her wrist the symbol that she is the master of something very powerful. If we put away the women’s lib movement and just think about it, what woman does not want to feel safe and secure? Who does not, at some point in time, want to be taken care of? To me, the Nine of Pentacles is a comforting card and one where I would like to live one day.

On the Ethyrial Tarot © version of the card, we see a form flying high in the sky. Below it are nine pentacles. Some seem to be reaching out for our flying figure. In my dreams, when I am flying, I have found a secret to staying in the air. When I was younger, I would fly and it was always amazing, as it still is so. But in my youth, I would lose altitude. You see, when I used to fly, something would take the wind out of my sails, so-to-speak, and I would start to drop down closer to the ground. Once there, the people on the ground would try to pull me out of the air; quite a dramatic thing. If anyone grabbed hold of me, my energy would be disrupted and I would then begin my downward crash. It took me many years of dreaming and flying to figure out that if I stayed high in the air, far from the ground, nothing could pull me down.

One might think that such a revelation would come easily, but it did not. Now when I fly, instead of diving, I pull up and soar higher and higher until I am in a current that allows me to gently glide, unabsconded by those far below. In our lives, this way of learning to fly can be much the same.

Each of us chooses our direction and height. The closer to “the ground” that we venture, the more likely we are to be pulled in by earthly things. High ideals do more than just set our sights on future possibilities. They help us lift ourselves up higher and higher until we finally find that place where it is easier for us to soar.

I was watching a reality show. In it the various “psychics” competed to see who would be awarded money and title. I noticed something that caught my attention. Those who claimed to work in the light were in constant conflict with one whom they felt was working with darker forces. We all want to feel that our intentions and behaviors are of a lofty nature. What I saw was that these self-proclaimed “light workers” were actually moving so close to the “ground” of their spirits that they defeated the very ideas that should be in place for all spiritual beings. In fact, it was the person who worked with the “darker” powers who respected the space of everyone. Those who worked in the light actually forced themselves upon this other person because they judged that they were “right”. I have watched this scenario play out at many an event where spiritual people pass judgment and then force their energies upon those that they believe are either misguided or need it.

May I ask what ever happened to asking permission before moving into someone’s space? In our Nine of Pentacles, the image soars high. The pentacles, an earth element, by the way, reach out for the lofty figure. The closer our flyer gets to those pentacles the more likely he or she is sure to fall. Our competing psychics moved based on their own judgments and beliefs. We must be careful what and how we judge. One thing that I have learned is that we are not so intelligent or so well guided that we can make such a judgment. Someone claiming to be guided by spirit who violates another is not working in the light. By the end of the show, I was more impressed by our voodooist than the light workers. That person respected the space of the others. That person did not force their energy upon anyone. Why is that?

In my dreams, I can stay afloat because I try to avoid the pitfalls. I do not let myself fall so low as to be dragged down. If I start to fall, I immediately maneuver myself so that I gain more altitude. Once higher up, I do not fall. So, too, should we do in our spiritual lives. We cannot assume that what we do, just because our intentions may be “good”, does not somehow cross a line. Only by constantly testing ourselves and seeking higher ground can we hope to approach our ideals. For many people, this is a difficult concept. Surely if one is called to help people, then that guidance is what makes the difference, is it not? Let me put it this way. Were we to assume that each person had an actual circle around them and that that circle is sacred to that person, might we be more wary of moving into it? Directing your energy toward anyone without their express permission, regardless of your intentions, is violating them and their spirit.

If I were to call in a very old story about a rock and the one being without fault being allowed to cast it, would that cause you pause? Our Nine of Pentacles shows us where we want to be. It reminds us that we can so easily be pulled out of the air by things that seem minor to us. Often, by the time that we realize that something is awry, we have moved beyond that moment that sent us spiraling downward. A little forethought could help us become the person that we are trying to become. Contemplating our actions with great care before we set them in motion is more of a spiritual act than trying to shed light on the darkest soul. It is not our place to judge the walk of another. Nor is it our place to move them into a different path. Our path consists in walking it with integrity and, hopefully, finding higher ground upon which to stand.

As we continue our walk, let us take some time to ponder these things. None of us is so evolved that we know better than someone else. In fact, the wisest person realizes just how much they do not know. I wish you the realization of your limits and the ability to soar above them.
